UCAS Tariff Points Calculator

Why Does the Tariff Matter?

Many university courses advertise entry requirements as a total number of tariff points (e.g. 120 points from three A-Levels). Understanding how your qualifications translate into tariff points helps you identify which courses you are eligible for and plan your application strategy.

How Points Are Calculated

Each qualification has a specific size (how much content it covers) and grade. Larger qualifications such as a full A-Level carry more points than smaller ones such as an AS-Level. Higher grades earn more points. The tariff points for different qualifications are set by UCAS and reviewed periodically. The values in this calculator reflect the current UCAS Tariff tables for 2025 entry.

Key Facts

• A-Levels are the most common qualification. An A* grade is worth 56 points, an A is 48, a B is 40, a C is 32, a D is 24, and an E is 16.
• AS-Levels are half the size of a full A-Level. An A grade is worth 20 points, B is 16, C is 12, D is 10, and E is 6.
• BTEC Level 3 qualifications come in various sizes. The Extended Diploma (equivalent to 3 A-Levels) can earn up to 168 points (D*D*D*).
• Cambridge Technicals follow the same tariff structure as BTEC qualifications at Level 3.
• The EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) is worth up to 28 points for an A* grade and is highly regarded by universities for demonstrating independent research skills.
• The IB Diploma tariff points are calculated per subject. Higher Level (HL) subjects carry more points than Standard Level (SL) subjects. An HL grade 7 is worth 56 points, an SL grade 7 is worth 28 points.
• You can combine points from different qualification types up to the limits set by individual universities. Some universities cap the number of points accepted from certain qualifications.

Important Notes

Not all qualifications attract UCAS Tariff points. Only accredited qualifications on the UCAS Tariff tables can be counted. Always check with your chosen universities to confirm which qualifications they accept and whether they apply any caps or specific grade requirements alongside the tariff point total.

Tariff points are just one part of a university application. Admissions tutors also consider your personal statement, reference, and in some cases interviews or admissions tests. A high tariff point total does not guarantee an offer, and a lower total does not rule you out if other elements of your application are strong.
